Appearance Description:

Art by Rott-i-kins

Although mostly humanoid with regards to body shape and general features, Nazir is quite obviously not human. His hairless body is completely covered in snakelike scales, which are a uniform dark tan shade. His mouth and his chocolate brown eyes appear human, as does his nose, though it is quite flat. However, his ears are just slits in the sides of his head. He has long, white claws on his hands and feet. His mouth is filled with small but sharp lizardlike teeth, and he has a slender forked tongue and retractable, slightly curved fangs like a snake. At 5'8" he is short for his species, with a thin, wiry build. Life in the desert and two years as an outcast has hardened his body and left almost no body fat. He does have some scratches and scars from his time as an outcast, but most of this is from other coatl. His most noticeable scar being the triangle outline branded on the back of his neck, the alchemical symbol for fire - an equilateral triangle, tip up, 3" sides, lines about 1/2" thick.

Nazir has a pair of feathered wings sprouting from between his shoulderblades that are neither large enough nor strong enough to allow him to fly. The feathers of these wings are dark brown, nearly black. His wings are slender, with a wingspan of about 4'. Nazir's wings are hollow, bird-like, and very fragile. He will draw them in if it gets windy, but usually they are relaxed and half-spread. Clothing wise, Nazir hates being constricted and will wear as little as possible. When he does have to wear clothes, he favours loose-fitting outfits - whatever is on hand. He is normally barefoot.

The outcast has the tense, wary look of a survivor - not timid but watching and waiting. He never seems to relax fully.

Personality Description:
Nazir has always been a sort of low-key people-person, quiet but clingy. He likes being around people, especially those in his "group", and can be very affectionate. He easily falls into an us vs them mentality if he feels threatened. He can be reserved, not revealing much of himself at first, and even once he gets to know a person. He prefers group activities to one-on-one conversation.

The Coatl is athletic and active. He likes to run for the sheer joy of it. Nazir likes to feel things as if his emotions are linked to movement. He is also intensely spiritual in the Coatl manner - although this leads to a sort of emotional tearing inside him as he has become a demon in their eyes. Even in his own mind, he considers himself deservedly outcast, and this makes him a little bitter and a little lost. He is somewhat pantheistic (God is in all), a snake-worshipper, respectful of nature. Names are important to him - they tell you who a person is. Nicknames would confuse him. His mind is somewhat poetic - he generally thinks in images rather than words.

He believes in his heart that he is truly not an adult, unborn, a demon, not fully Coatl, because he never had his vision. And he wonders why. Yet he still trusts the Gods. He fights to survive, but still feels guilty, unworthy of it. A deep set internalized existential crisis. He has had to steal and scrounge to survive and band together with other outcasts, occasionally fighting off people he truly believes are better than him. And in some way, the other outcasts have become his people too.

The Coatl are the only sentient beings on Hvala (that he knows of), and they have never had any contact with people from other planets, so Nazir has never had to deal with other cultures or species. He's only known the desert and the clans. The coatl are a primitive, matriarchal, deeply spiritual, clan-based society. They have an intense nature and elemental based mysticism and do practice various forms of magic, although this is mostly the domain of their priest/esses. But they have no modern technology to speak of.

He has a deep fear, bordering on hatred, of fire. It has great power and should be treated with respect - from a distance. Fire being the enemy is a deeply ingrained aspect of his spirituality.

Species Abilities:

Skin is tough as leather, resistant to scratching. The coatl's body is built for the desert - he can withstand extremes of hot weather and duststorms as well as being able to go quite long without water.

Carnivorous diet mostly consisting of rodents and insects. He does not eat plants and most added chemicals would probably make him incredibly sick.

Cold weather slows his body down, he may seem sluggish, sleepy. Extreme cold may cause forced hibernation.

Secret name - anyone who finds out his secret name can use it to compel his obedience. (He doesn't know it yet himself.)

Powers:
Element of Fire -
Unknown to himself he is completely immune to natural fire, but not magical fire or other heat sources such as lava.

He has an affinity for fire-based magic. It would be twice as easy for him to learn spells based on summoning/controlling fire. On the other hand learning water-based magic would be at least twice as hard, if not impossible.

History:

Nazir is a Coatl, a humanoid with reptilian features found on the planet Hvala.

Nazir was an unremarkable child born to unremarkable parents, both common labourers. He was the first boy, having two older sisters, in a matriarchal society. Neither his parents nor his siblings had wings, so no one was expecting him to. But they did begin growing in when he was only two months old. This was significant, because winged Coatl held a prominent place in their religion, becoming priests and warriors.

His family raised him until he was five years old. This was customary so that children could get to know their clan, and grow with family before they were taken. Nazir was then taken to the Religious Quarter. There he was placed in a sort of foster home, where all winged children were kept until their Naming/Second Birth. The 'unborn' children were too young to begin any real training, but they were taught some basic skills that would help them in the future. Although Nazir's family were permitted to visit him occasionally, they usually didn't, and he barely recognized them when they did. He was much more attached to the other 'unborn' winged children being raised with him. By the time he'd turned 18, however, most people suspected he'd be outcast, and as all the Coatl his age had already been named, he wasn't close to anyone. He was even an object of mockery or pity to some. This was made worse by the fact that he was winged, and a winged outcast was almost completely unheard of.

Naming ceremony: All Coatl have a naming ceremony. They are considered 'unborn' before it, and therefore unable to be apprenticed. The ceremony begins with a vision, usually when the person is 10-16 but it varies, with winged Coatl usually receiving it the earliest. If they haven't had the vision by 18, they are considered cursed and are branded and exiled to the fire pits. These outcasts are the equivalent of demons in the Coatl religion. This vision is where the Coatl would learn their element. Outcasts have no element, no secret name (discovered during naming ceremony), and no public name (given before apprenticeship).

Like all outcasts, once he turned 18 Nazir was exiled to the firepits outside the Coatl settlement. Rejected by his clan, he was no longer entitled to the clan name that even an unborn could use. He had only the basic skills that he had been taught by the priests. All he could do was survive.

They welcomed him, the other outcasts. There were few of them - only a handful had survived the harsh environment, and there hadn't been many to begin with. He was the only winged one. Nazir's wings caused quite a stir. Most thought him a sign of some sort, but whether of a return, a renewing, or a rebellion no-one agreed. A few were jealous, though his wings hadn't made him special enough to escape being outcast. He only tried to survive. He had to learn quick - to coil up with these strangers for warmth in the cold nights, to find shade in the desert, to find food and water, and most importantly to live life though placed in opposition to everything he ever knew.

And then one night, everything changed. Sometimes, the outcasts would have to leave their firepits to find water. In fact, this happened quite often, and the best time to get water was when the true coatl were asleep. Nazir was hunting with a few others when he saw something strange - a raven flew from out of nowhere and landed not far from him. He knew ravens did not fly at night and that they were messengers from the gods, so he watched, and when it beckoned, he followed, slipping away from the others. The messenger led him to a portal, which to the coatl looked like a flame in the desert.

The raven spoke to the coatl and what it said and promised was enough to convince the outcast to step through. He ended up on Manta Carlos and after wandering in somewhat of a daze, someone brought him to the academy. He couldn't quite explain what had happened to him, except that he was from a different planet and had been sent here. The coatl did know what a school was though and was quickly signed up since it seemed the young man would not be able to return to his home planet.

Additional Information:
Coatl speak their own language, similar to Arabic. A mostly spoken language. Very primitive society. Would be behind on/have a different view of most academic subjects.

Wears a translation charm that translates his speech to English and allows him to understand as well. Spoken language only.

His rough life and training have given him endurance and agility. He knows basic self-defense/hand-to-hand combat. He has wilderness survival skills, but they are more suited to the desert, and he doesn't know how to climb or swim.

Unknown to him -
The Creator does have opponents and he is somewhat of a pawn.
He is going to have his vision on MC.
He will find his secret name.
His element is fire, which he doesn't even know is possible. (He also doesn't know about his powers)
