Mary in the Maze

The Library was quiet, and dim. Sunlight filtered in through high windows, illuminating streams of dust. Rows and rows of bookshelves made a labyrinth of the room. Armchairs and other lounge items were scattered in what room they could fit in. Sometimes students were in these.

Deep in the maze, a faint humming reverberated over the dusty books. The faint thump and slide of books being placed on a shelf broke the humming, though the music continued.

If the "librarian" was seen, it would be clear that it was no staff member, but a student pushing a heavy cart full of old tomes. She'd lean over, grab one, and slide it back into it's home before pushing the cart further on.

The cart passed into the sunlight and Mary paused, letting the sun hit her, though the light passed through. With a sigh, she continued, winding deeper into the maze.

Work, work, work, and more flippin' work! Why must he be bombarded with so much godforsaken work!? What does it matter? Between being labled a freak for much of his life and pretty much not giving a rat's behind about it for the most part, Cadence didn't think he'd really need to go through with it right about now. No matter which way you put it however, that's student life for you. His task at hand? A five-page American History report. History was by far his least favorite subject. Beggars can't be choosers...right? Whatever. Let's just get it over with he thought.

He took his sweet time making his way over to the library from the dorms. He was in no hurry whatsoever. As much as he would love to be able to put it off until the last possible moment, Cade knew in that fragile little head of his that he could not afford to do such a thing. He needed to get this darn thing, like, yesterday. He wanted to get this thing finished as quickly as he possibly could. That way, he could move on with his not-so-exciting life and not have to worry about anything else for a while.

Cade took a heavy breath before finally entering the labyrinth that was a library. Books about anything and everything were abroad. "Where do I even begin..." he thought aloud. After walking for what seemed like an eternity, as if Lady Luck were truly on his side, Cade spotted a young woman pushing a cart around, one that he most definitely did not recognize from anywhere before. First thing that came to mind? She was probably the librarian or perhaps an assistant. After much deliberation, he somehow was able to muster up the courage to speak. The library cart creaked to a slow halt, its driver pausing at the sound of a question. Mary stared ahead a moment before slowly turning to glance at the student. She looked him over in silence, taking him in before giving a soft shrug. Shorter kid. Uncomfortable. She spoke with soft words that well-suited the hushed quiet of the room.

"I help out every now and then, but I'm not an official librarian. You need not refer to me as miss. I'm a student, like you."

She watched a moment more before turning back to her cart and reaching for a book. Gripping the heavy spine, she lifted it and placed it in a spot on the shelf before heaving the heavy cart forward again. It stopped in a few moments and Mary repeated the action, gripping a book, placing it back on the shelf.

He thought right, for the most part it had seemed, assisting in some manner anyhow. Cade could barely make out what the young lady had just said. Then again, in a library, that's the way it was supposed to be, not that he really cared either way. He was a man on a mission, and he would stop at nothing to complete this utmost important, and yet seemingly tedious objective at hand.

It seemed like this lady knew what she was doing. The next time that came to poor little Cade's mind was that she may or may not be able, or willing for that matter, to help him. For all he knew, she might be enveloped in her own agendas. Whatever the case may be, he would have to try, much to his own dismay. Not really caring what to refer to the lady as at this point, Cade spoke again, as softly as he possibly could without causing a disturbance.

"Okay, so maybe you can help me, just for a moment. I'm looking for books on U.S. History. Would you be so kind as to assist me?" he asked. That's about as politely as he could possibly be a stranger, and as always in the case poor little Cadence, positive results were never guaranteed.

Mary sighed and pulled the cart to a halt again. The boy couldn't have been any older than her, but she already felt a twinge of annoyance usually reserved for younger students. She turned to him slowly, deadpan. Her fingers released the cart and she took a step away from it, hoping he would follow her as she wandered down the aisle.

"This way." She said, leading him towards the section she knew housed the history books. She slid a hand over the numbers that labelled the bookshelves.

She stopped suddenly, gesturing to the shelves before her. He'd have to specify if he wanted to get a smaller section. Poor soul probably had a huge report ahead of him. It would be no easy task, with the number of bookshelves here.

"History has so many parts, making up a whole. You did not specify a part, so you get the whole. All twenty bookshelves." Mary turned to look him over. "Unless, of course, you had a specific part to which I could further point you...?"

Right.

Such a vague topic. He knew that. It wasn't like he was playing dumb or anything. Or maybe he was? In any case, Cade didn't seem to care either way. Or maybe he really didn't. Typical poker-faced Cade. Without much of a choice in the matter, he followed suit of the young lady. Now if only he could find exactly what he was looking for in this part of the establishment.

"Well, I just hope I could find what I need in at least one of these..." He closely skimmed through some of the books, working his up from the bottom shelf, to as far as he could possibly reach. He hoped he could break it down with a more specific subject, rather, what he reluctantly came in here to study in the first place. "You got any that talk about the Cold War?"

He didn't really want to bother this lady more than he already has, but if he wanted to pass this godforsaken class, he would have to live with it.

Mary lets her eyes wander over the shelves. "Cold war.. Cold War..." She took a few hesitant steps in one direction before shaking her head and letting her shoulders slump. "Uhm..." She looked back to the boy and gave a sheepish smile. "Well. I don't know where they are... But I can help you look." She stepped into a slim aisle, skirting the spines of books with a slender finger.

"Well. I don't know if these are in any order... I mean, the others are, but these over here seem willy-nilly.. I don't know how they're sorted." She frowned and made a mental note to ask the librarian about this.

"The Cold War, huh? Sounds like a boring report." She said quietly, forcing conversation to fill the awkward moment.
