The severe weather had accomplished what many weeks and special teachers couldn't; driven Tien indoors. She was still adamant that she wouldn't attend classes or become in any way a student; all these students were children, and while she appeared twenty, she'd been around for at least fifty winters, thanks a bunch. Humans looked on her poor literacy and lack of worldly knowledge as childish, or innocent, and thought she needed to be educated like a human - but Tien knew when a tree was dying long before it did, which berries were edible and which poisonous, how to survive. Humans surrounded themselves with comfort and luxury, far from nature, and all of it meant that they didn't know how to survive. But, given her recent brush with something terribly unpleasant called 'hypothermia', she was finally willing to give a little ground to her captors.
Though she was used to having a lot of space, the interior of the building was cavernous and frightening. She flew quietly, counting doorways and feeling smaller than she ever had. Being around so many people made her conscious, for the first time, of how vulnerable she really was. Right now she wanted to find a mouse hole and crawl inside it. When she reached her new room - faster than a human would have, see, it wasn't all bad - she drifted upwards and peered at the closed door. A smaller door, just seven inches tall, had been cut into it. Tien frowned suspiciously, then pushed it open and took to the air again. Two beds, a lot of giant stuff, and... and... an entire house.
She zipped towards it in bewilderment. It was set on a table in front of the window, perfect and complete. Landing softly, she pushed at the white front door and moved in, wings brushing the doorframe, staring stupidly at the hallway and stairs. Poking her head through the first doorway, she saw a fully-furnished room, with a table and sofa and chairs, even bookshelves. Tien didn't - couldn't - understand why humans had made a human house that was so small. She reached towards a switch on the wall and pressed it cautiously, flinching slightly when a light hanging from the ceiling came on. This made absolutely no sense to speak of. Besides, all she'd needed was shelter. Fairies didn't care about furniture and curtains and elektrissity. Somewhat insulted, she moved across the hall to a perfectly fitted kitchen.
Tien had almost decided that she was going to flounce out and live in the forest even if it turned her into a small block of ice, when she idly tried the tap on the sink and water came out. Instant water! No flying around looking for streams or, failing that, a rock collecting rainwater - water, right there!
The lights blossomed all over the dollhouse as she explored it, but amazing though the plastic windows were, they didn't hide the sound of the dorm's door opening. Worried, Tien peered out through the bedroom window.
