Corinth enjoyed quiet days, when relatives were out in the town and his work was slow. No special orders, no rambunctious relatives chasing about the house. This kind of peace was scarce since he'd left the island on a work trip. Lucan seemed to be adjusted to life of Manta Carlos, and Xiphium's island store had a good business running for the season, even if it was only for the masquerade at the month's end. It was an uneasy quiet, without a sound from Lucan and the others had all left for the day, with Corinth alone to worry. There was a celebration in the forest all weekend, originally, both children had intended to attend though Lucan had opted out of attending the second day.

His daughter had become a fine young woman in spite of his terrible parenting, which only made him worry more if he was taking care of Lucan properly. Corinth hadn't the slightest idea what parents really did, but he tried his best. What worried him now, was that Lucan hadn't left his room since the previous evening. Whether it was a bad breakup, or something worse, it wasn't something he had any previous experience with. He brought with him two mugs of tea - as much for his own nerves as it was for Lucan's - knocking on Lucan's door.

He'd been outed, everyone likely knew he was half demon, he didn't really expect people to hate over it, at least not the ones he knew, his anxiety over it dealt more with himself. He hated being halt demon, he wanted that half gone, but that didn't seem like an option, at least not yet.

Lucan jumped a bit at the knocking on his door, he'd been sitting on his bed reading some books on magic. He knew it was likely Corinth, or perhaps one of the girls here to check on him. Quickly hiding the books he'd vanish and reappear by his door.

Hesitating just a moment he'd open it, "oh, hey Corinth," he'd say, offering a small smile, "what's up?" Then he'd notice the tea, "oh, thanks, he'd step aside, letting his guardian enter, accepting his cup.

Corinth was no master of empathy, but the fact that something was bothering Lucan was not well hidden. He frowned, handing one cup to Lucan and sipping on his own. Corinth frowned, sitting at the foot of Lucan's bed.

"Lucan, listen. I know I am not the finest of father figures, but I am your guardian and I would like to help you, if I can. I'm worried about you."

Corinth took another sip of his tea, clearly trying to explain himself properly, but trying a little too hard. Lucan would know that such conversations were out of place for Corinth, considering the laissez-faire parenting style he usually held.

"You haven't said a word since last night. It may not be my business, but it is my responsibility to make sure you're alright. Whatever the problem, I will do everything I can to resolve it."

"You're doing a better job than my old man ever did," he said truthfully, he'd only met his father once and it'd gone poorly, it was an event that driven home his hatred of his demonic half, "you're here talking, trying, more than he ever did."

He'd take a sip of his tea, humming in thought, "Elisa came by last night," as one of his girlfriends she came by often, even spent the night sometimes, "something happened at the festival after I left for work."

The tea was helping keep his anxiety at bay, having a panic attack wasn't going to help with anything. "She was talking to a demon kid, mentioned me but she forgot about all the people with enhanced hearimg," he'd been outed, hell he'd already received a text from a classmate asking about him being a demon.

Corinth remained silent for a while, probably longer than he should have. It was a peaceful, contemplative silence filled with the aroma of lemons.

"Being half-demon.. It is something you were never fond of, I know. But this isn't something that defines you, and.."

Corinth gazed across the room, at the crucifix strung on the wall. It unnerved him, slightly, but he understood that this was as important to Lucan as weaving was to him. It was a safeguard against the unknown, protection from all the bad things.

"Being a demon, isn't the end-all-be-all that it gets made out to be. It's not about going to which afterlife, it's not a punishment. It's no different than being human. Red hair, black hair, blonde, skin colours and body types. Cultures and societies. It's not something to be ashamed of. When people talk of the.. man upstairs, or his son, they don't ever say that they love everyone except these specific people. They love all things. Even demons. If someone tries to tell you otherwise, well." Corinth shrugged, setting down his mug and turning back to Lucan with a sad smile. "Clearly they need to refresh their memories. Creatures with short lifespans have difficulty with such things."

Corinth sighed heavily, resting one hand on Lucan's knee.

"Being a demon doesn't make you less human, Lucan. Humanity was never about species. If others can't see that, it's their loss. The morally blind don't get free tickets to heaven."

He listened, what he said made sense, mankind had a choice in how they'd live, whether it'd be for good or bad, even Lucifer chose to rebel and fall, he wasn't born into evil. Then he remembered him, Memphisto, or at least that's who his father claimed to be, every time Lucan looked in the mirror, he saw how much he looked like him.

"And what if I end up like him?" he'd ask, talking about his biological father, the one that'd abandoned him and his mother, "some say nature is inherited from father to son." He wasn't like his dad, he was already different, for starters he actually cared about people and didn't view them as things.

"I don't want to be like him....but at the same time...I'm not stupid enough to think that there can't be at least a bit of him in me," all his demon stuff came from him, hell he was a bit of a trickster like him, though his trickery was kind and warm hearted without ill intent.

"Lucan, you can't inherit your father's personality through genes. Children learn from their parents, as they grow. Your father never influenced your childhood. You are more like your mother than you know."

Corinth looked down and grinned, a myriad of possible futures for his adopted son flickering in his thoughts.

"At the very worst, Lucan, I would say you are in danger of becoming like me."

He lifted his head, propping his chin on the heel of his hand. As much as Lucan feared becoming a demon like his father, Corinth couldn't imagine it possible. This child was still learning, growing, becoming an adult in his own way, much like Corinth had, and his daughter after him.

"You show more signs of humanity than you do demonic traits, didn't you know? It's not in the nature of a demon like that to feel self-conscious, or even feel love. You never intentionally harm anyone, and feel regret when you do. You're having a rough time trying to conform to this idea you have for demons and humans. It's perfectly understandable, and you aren't the only one. Just know, Lucan, that there's nothing you could ever do that would make your true friends abandon you. They may be curious about the demon, but it is nothing to be ashamed of. You are Lucan. That is all that will ever matter."

Lucan would listen as his guardian spoke, the things he said made sense and they were things he hoped were true. "I mean, being like you doesn't sound bad," he'd say, smiling a bit, he'd done more for him than most other adult in his life.

There was still doubt though, the question of whether or not his demonic side would ultimately bind him to a certain nature. "Like my mother...," his memories of her were fuzzy, but he remembered that she'd worked hard to take care of him, even as she got sick.

He'd chuckle and take a sip of his tea, "thank you," it was a lot to think on, but he was grateful for it. "I won't be him....I'll be me," he wasn't sure what he'd be like, but he knew for now that'd he'd be better than Mephisto.

Corinth gently lay one arm across Lucan's shoulders, drawing him close to plant a kiss on top of his son's head. His son. Corinth squeezed tight for just a brief moment before letting Lucan go, a newfound determination in his eyes.

"If your father ever tries to speak to you, Lucan, I want to be the first to know. I'd like to have a... demon to demon chat with the man."

Corinth ruffled Lucan's hair and stood up, careful not to spill any of the tea.

"You're under my protection, Lucan, which means you have an awful lot of power standing behind you when you need it."
