Jude had been warned ahead of time that it would hurt. The process would be long and slow, requiring seamlessly reconnecting nerves, meshing flesh to machine. The prosthetic wasn't one that was going to just slide on over top of his stump. The prosthetic was one that was, in a lot of ways, going to just be built into his arm. It'd be able to reconnect and disconnect, but the process of getting it to the point was not an easy one.

"At least you only have to do this once," Armorer had said, as if it was some kind of major benefit that the excruciating agony he was in would only come once. Once the plate was involved, he'd been told, disconnecting the arm would hurt, but it would be more like being stabbed, and less like being flayed alive.

Small mercies.

He kept to himself the first day, and it was only on the second day that he even bothered to update anyone. The fact that he was sleeping was not a particularly comforting sign, but he'd been signed out of class by the second day for medical reasons.
