Name: Masuku no Hanako (Hanako of the Masks)

Nickname: Hanako

Age: About 60 years

Birthday: Unknown

Gender: None, often takes on a feminine appearance

Species: Menreiki (Mask Yokai)

Category: Citizen

Career: Spookster

Appearance Description:

While capable of taking on many different shapes and sizes, Hanako seems most fond of taking on the appearance of young decaying girl in a pale dress that is reminiscent of something out of a horror movie and is accompanied by 8 floating masks that appear Japanese in origin. Her hair appears long and stringy and the upper part of her face is always obscured by one of her masks so only her cold lips and part of her nose can be made out. If one happens to see behind the mask though, they find the Hanako lacks eyes and instead is just bare skin grown over the sockets. When in her true form, Hanako nothing more than dark purplish gas surrounded by floating masks. If one was to touch Hanako, regardless of her appearance, she would feel like like thick air.

The only consistent part of her appearance are her 8 floating masks that are always within 3 meters of her main body. Each of these masks correspond to a different emotion. Mask of Joy is associated with the Fuko no Kami, a god of happiness mask that takes on the appearance of laughing mustached man with a golden teardrop on his forehead. Mask of Trust is associated with the Okame mask, which looks like chubby pale woman. Mask of Fear is an elderly old woman gasping in terror. The Mask of Surprise appears as Hyottoko, a well know character with face that looks as if he was whistling. The Mask of Sadness appears to be a female Kabuki mask with two blue tears on its cheek. The Mask of Disgust looks to be a green Tengu mask with an elongated nose. The Mask of Anger takes on the appearance of an scary looking red demon. Lastly there is the Mask of the Anticipation which looks to be a smiling Kitsune. By default, Hanako usually “wears” the Mask of Anticipation on her face for she is always anticipating something to occur.

Personality Description:

Mischievous: Hanako is always up to something, plotting harmless pranks on others to insight some form of emotional response.

Childish: For a 60 year yokai, her behavior is more consistent of a poorly disciplined child.

Creepy: While she can take on almost any form, she prefers to take on appearances that many find disturbing in order to more easily scare others.

Soft Spoken: While capable of speaking, Hanako prefers to say the minimum number of words that she can get away with.

Monotone: No matter what voice she takes one, Hanako speech is dry and devoid of any emotion.

Dramatic: To combat inability to express her emotions through her voice, she uses a combination of her masks and exaggerated body movements to convey the emotions she is currently feeling.

Species Abilities:

As a menreiki, Hanako is traditionally considered to be a type of Yokai. Such of yokai is said to come into being when a collection of old masks manifest a spirit of their own but given however unusual menreiki are there is little details on how or why they come about.

Immortality: Like many other Yokai, Hanako is immortal and will likely live forever unless all of her Masks of Emotion are destroyed.

Gaseous: Except for her masks, Hanako’s body appears some sort of magical miasma. This allows Hanako body to slip thought tiny cracks and seeps though thought she will not get far without finding space to slip her masks through since they are solid physical objects.

Float: Her main body (regardless of his mimicked form) and masks in her control can all float in any direction.

Masks of Emotions: Hanako must have 8 masks with her at all times that contain her 8 distinct emotion. These masks include: joy, trust, fear, surprise, sadness, disgust, anger and anticipation. If one is damaged or destroyed, she becomes unstable and will seek out someone to repair the mask or find replacement mask to contain her destroyed emotion. When a suitable mask is found, it will take up to a year until the mask is fully acclimated. Until then, her ability to emulated that emotion is greatly hampered. If all 8 of her Masks of Emotion are destroyed, she will cease to exist.

Mask Appropriation: Hanako can add and control any masks within 3 meters. Whiles these masks are under her control, they do not contain any of her essence and will eventually discard them. That is UNLESS one of her Masks of Emotion was destroyed in which case she will attempt incorporate the new mask into a new Mask of Emotion.

Spirit Vulnerabilities: As a type of yokai, she is vulnerable to attacks meant to harm spirits such as charms, talismans, or certain magics.

Powers:

Mimetic:

A special effect of Hanako’s gaseous body is her ability to copy any object that so long the object has a volume that could fit 3x3x3 meter volume. The object she wishes to copy also must be a physical object that she has encountered and enveloped at least once with her gaseous form. If Hanko wants to take on the form of pink coffee mug, she must have previously encountered a pink coffee mug in real life. Hanako cannot copy objects displayed in pictures or screens but can copy the pictures or screens themselves. Hanako can also copy any animal or person she has she has met much like any other object and can freely take on that form whenever she wishes. Hanako however is unable replicate the face of the creature she is mimicking so they will appear as prefect replicates save for the face with lack any sort of facial features such as eyes, nose or mouth. This curiously extends non-living objects as well. If she was to disguise herself as statue or movie poster, the faces of these objects will similarly be left blank.

While a convincing copy, the form that Hanako takes is still only made up of gas and is incapable of interacting with physical objects. Also, regardless of her disguise Hanako’s masks must be within 3 meters of her main body and her carefully crafted disguise as a traffic cone can be ruined when one notices the nearby floating masks. While she is able to generate any sound the object she currently is is able to make (such as a piano playing melody), any time she spooks her voice will be but a monotone version the that persons particular voice.

Pros:

  • Can mimic as any physical object
  • Can mimic even people and creatures
  • Can mimic any object she has previously mimicked
  • Can float even when mimicked
  • Can mimic for as long as she pleases
  • Can mimic whatever sounds the object she currently is can make

Cons:

  • Must has enveloped the object, creature, or person at least once to mimic them
  • Is unable to mimic faces of an object, creature or the persons she is mimicking
  • Despite appearing solid, her mimicked form is still gaseous and can not interact with most objects physically.
  • Her masks must remain 3 meters of her mimicked form
  • Voice will be monotone regardless of current form she is mimicking

Ethophoria Miasma:

Living beings that breath in the gaseous substance that makes up Hanako’s body will experienced an altered state of exaggerated emotions. For example, a joke that would normally warrant a chuckle will cause the victim to erupt in boisterous laughter. On the converse, the victim may fall into wailing tears over a commercial with sad animals or become berserk in a fit of anger after hearing a snide comment directed at them. Basically, if one was to experience any sort of emotion (no matter how small of a feeling it may be) while under the effects of Hanako’s miasma, they will experience said emotion to its fullest and in its most extreme form. The effects of breathing in the miasma only lasts between 3 to 7 minutes and only living corporeal beings.

Pros:

  • Useful in provoking emotions out of others
  • Can be used as defense to leave aggressors emotional unstable
  • Instantly regenerate the gas that was inhaled by victim
  • Effects almost any living creature capable of feeling emotions

Cons:

  • Can be accidently breathed in by those who get close to her gaseous form
  • May accidently cause unintended effects such as extreme anger, fear, or sadness.
  • Effects only last from 3 to 7 minutes so long as victem is not breathing in more fumes
  • Does not affect machines, ghosts, undead, or those incapable of feeling emotions.

Biography:

Hanako’s origins are largely a mystery to the students of Kimyona High School in northern Japan. Some speculate that they are a set of masks buried under the school coalesced into a menreiki due to rumors that the school was built on top of an old noh theater. Others suggested that she is the apparition of a girl named Hanako had died during a school play when a piece of lighting equipment fell on top of her head. A few suggest that the yokai has always been here before the school’s construction and that it merely awoke after some disturbance. Hanako herself unsure of her own “birth”, only knowing that she just suddenly came into existence one night in the school grounds of Kimyona.

Whatever it was that brought her into this world, she has been happily haunting and scaring the students of Kimyona High School since 1953. While the name Hanako came about due to belief that she was originally the ghost of the girl Hanako a few months prior, the name nevertheless stuck. Students referred to her “The Hanako of Kimyona” or “Hanako of the Masks” as not to confuse this Hanako for the more well know urban myth of “Hanako-san” the bathroom ghost. While there were many rumors of Hanako as stealing student’s souls and an omen of bad luck, Hanako was in truth rather harmless. She was but an elaborate prankster who enjoys seeing the funny facial expressions of humans. Using her ability mimic and alter emotions, Hanako terrified lone stray students with haunting sights a piano playing by itself, masks following a person, or wandering around as normal student and freaking them out when she turns to show that she has no face.

Hanako continued her pranks and jumpscares for many decades, unofficially becoming the school’s mascot and even a small fanbase though most students are wary of her scares. Sadly in 2017, Hanako scared a girl so badly that she fell to her death. While judged an accident, it invited suspicion from one student who was a Shrine Maiden in training who only just moved to the school. The young shrine maiden prepared for the encounter, ready do battle with the legend “Hanako of the Masks”. When she was finally able to draw out the Menreiki, the Shrine Maiden found that Hanako was actually not as malicious as she seemed but recognized that the menreiki was dangerous and may accidentally kill another student. So, the two engaged in an exhausting battle until Hanako gained the upper hand was about to kill the young Shrine Maiden for trying to banish her. But before she could land the final blow, Shrine Maiden’s mentor intervened and put down Hanako. While he recognized that Hanako meant no malice and this pupil’s actions provoked Hanako into fighting, he also saw Hanako’s presence was too dangerous tolerate at the school and trapped Hanako’s masks in a small wooden box.

After chastising his pupil for her hasty and reckless behavior, the mentor had the box sent Mantra Carlos to an old friend that would take care of menreiki or at the very least place it somewhere where its troublesome nature will not be an issue. Unfortunately, box she was originally contained in broke during while being unloaded and escaped onto the island. Now free in a new island, Hanako is back to doing what she does best: spooking others for her own jolly amusement.

Additional Information:

Her preferred disguise, the corpse girl that looks as if it came from a horror movie, was mimicked off of cosplayer who shortly ran off screaming.

The default mask she usually "wears" over her face is the Kitsume mask for she is always "anticipating" something to happen. She also seems to wear it when being serious or determined about something.

Learned English as a way freak out students in English class.

Is unsure why she is named Hanako but goes along with it since the students have refereed her as Hanako for so long.
