How this was soothing.
The teacher - Aswan couldn't really remember their name, not yet - droning on in the background.
The familiar smooth scratch of her perfectly-leaded mechanical pencil against thick, lined notebook paper - the best kind. No doodle anywhere to be seen, only pages upon pages of neat and organized notes, conveniently color-coded.
This was Aswan's life now - and to be honest, she was tired, as per usual, but note-taking was second nature to her, as was listening to the teachers. Except...
She sighed. This school was rather insistent on group projects. Or this teacher was - she couldn't tell which. She rarely did well in a group; which was due, probably, to her shortage of friends in that class. She hadn't really had friends since - well...
That was changing, ever since she'd arrived at both Starlight Academy and Manta Carlos in general. Especially since she'd been offered so many opportunities to expand her knowledge. So many people on this island...
All this she thought as she surveyed the class (or as much as she could see - she wasn't exactly the tallest girl there).

Elizabeth audibly groaned. Not another group project. She hadn't yet worked with someone that actually knew anything about what they were doing or were willing to put the work in to understand it. She much preferred to go and do things herself, often adding in higher level facts about the topic she'd found out from the library. Having a photographic memory had its uses but dealing with idiots certainly wasn't something it made easier.
She looked around the class to see who she hadn't worked with, maybe there would be someone with at least a half decent work ethic... She made eye contact with a dark haired girl. Aswan, the thought her name was.
Elizabeth ran through what she knew about her in her head, she was generally fairly quiet in class and from here Elizabeth could see her immaculate, colour coded notes. You, she thought to herself, will do.
Waiting for the teachers cue to do so Elizabeth walked over to her and held out a hand in greeting. "My name is Elizabeth. I understand yours is Aswan, correct? I came to ask if you would work with me since she insists we do the task in groups."

Aswan's head snapped up to glance at the girl who had just spoken to her. Dark red hair. Elizabeth, she thought. That was her name. She'd remembered it vaguely from a few days ago, when she'd been called on. From what she could tell, Elizabeth had a good work ethic. That meant she could do her work like she was supposed to. That was a good trait. One that, unlike many of her past classmates, seemed to be mutually assured.
Aswan realized she hadn't replied yet.
"Ahem. Yes. I am Aswan - and yes, I suppose I would work with you." A polite nod. "The teacher is rather insistent on group projects." A sigh. "I have a selection of topics here - if you would like, you can choose one accordingly."

Elizabeth glanced over the topics. "I'll let you pick. I'll be fine with any of them. Though there are a few I haven't studied before actually, which could be quite interesting to do" She looked back up to Aswan and decided to elaborate "I have a photographic memory so, give me an hour to research it and I'm good." She looked back over the list again and shrugs, looking to Aswan to see which she'd prefer.

That seemed to have piqued Aswan's interest. "Photographic memory. Quite impressive." A nod, with a renewed respect for this... Possible friend? Acquaintance as of now. Fascinating, to be honest. She herself had never been able to recall much from her older lessons without her ever-present notes. To have photographic memory must have been very useful in-class.
Oh, right.
Glancing over the topics, she finally pointed to one. "I've never heard of this one, not yet." Something, actually, quite interesting - the study of the power of control on a specific power - one, favorably, of the emotionally-controlled variety. "Any opposition for this topic?"

Elizabeth glanced at the topic she was pointing to and let out an almost sarcastic laugh. "No opposition to the topic here. If I did, it'd be rather unfortunate considering that's the other kind of power I have as well as my photographic memory."
Of course one of the topics on there would be this, everyone found having power over your own mind so fascinating. Elizabeth hardly disputed the fact that they were, considering we use our brains for everything. She'd always found it odd that so few people could really control it. Looking back to Aswan she asked "so, do you know anything at all about this topic?"

"How fortunate. I've done research on a topic similar to this one - mind-controlled powers, such as telekinesis. I suppose I can use that to compare between this topic." She flipped through many a colorful note, before stopping at a particular page. It wasn't colored like her school notes were, but rather on plain note paper. Rows upon rows of neat writing covered it. "Feel free to look the sheet over - it's well organized for convenience. Also, you mentioned you have powers having to do with the mind? How so?" Aswan asked casually.

Elizabeth began scanning through the notes, wondering how best to explain her power in a concise manner. After a moment or so she looked up and began speaking, "its called mind shifting, I don't know whether you've ever heard of it but it basically involves having complete control over my mind. I can manipulate my emotions, sensations, personality, everything really, at will. It allows me, along with my eidetic memory, to have a much higher level of intelligence than the majority as I can cancel out all distractions and emotional variations in my perception of events so I only see the facts of what happens." She paused for a moment to let her take it in and absorb the information before going back to reading over the immaculate notes and adding, almost as an afterthought, "it tends to not go down well with people. I speak the truth and they don't always like it. I suppose it gives me slightly... sociopathic tendencies in that I don't tend to empathise but its better this way. Better for me."
