Headmistress Cordelia Moore

This past school year had been a trying time for the academy and Manta Carlos at large. It seemed like a greater number of threats than usual had reared their ugly heads, trying to snuff out the abundance of life and prosperity that the citizens of the islands had worked so hard to cultivate and maintain. Headmistress Moore took a deep breath as she looked out onto the sea of faces before her. Each one was a light, a glimmer of potential ready to be sent out into the world. They had persevered, despite the odds against them.

She spoke, her voice echoing above and beyond the silent anticipation and pride filling the room.

"Welcome graduates and guests! We have had a year I doubt many of us will ever forget. Last year, I spoke to you all about change. How the journey, the time spent in this academy helped last year's graduates grow as individuals. How they were closer to the people they were meant to become. That is not the theme this year.

This year, I want to take a moment to talk to you about fortitude and perseverance. Since I last stood at this podium and looked out on a graduating class, so many tragedies have befallen our community. We will never forget the lost, but more importantly we will not allow ourselves to be stifled by those who would have us go quietly into the night.

As graduating students of Starlight Academy, you are on the cusp of doing great things for the two world we live in. Never forget that no matter the odds you can withstand the tide and come out stronger for it. Thank you, and congratulations.

I would now like to present the Starlight Academy graduating class of 2017!"

Cordelia moved away from the podium as the gathered students and guests applauded. She settled herself next to the diplomas as the announcer called them up one at a time to receive them.
No post order. Just get in and take your diploma.

Shay didn't know what she was expecting of the Headmistresses speech, but she hadn't expected it would be so relevant to her life right then. Was she looking for meaning in things that she shouldn't have been? Things that were just words. Feeling too poetic.

With a surname toward the end of the line, most everyone else had gone before Shay was called up to get her diploma. For a second, she was frozen before someone behind her nudged her.

Shay walked up to center stage, clasped the Headmistresses hand and took her diploma before stepping off. She had taken a second to glance out into the crowd in search of Angelo, or anyone else she might have known rooting for her.

Hal had been nervous all throughout the day. Since the morning he woke up, knowing it was graduation day, the jitters hadn't left him. It was an unfamiliar nervousness -- because everyone who knew him saw how he spends his free time, throwing himself in risky places every other time despite the threat. That was one sort of nervousness; this was different.

The previous year had been the worst for him, and he almost though he wouldn't make it to the next but here he was, all suited up for the ceremony, quietly picking at his sleeves to ease his nerves. He felt alone for that moment, listening to the Headmistress speak before them. Her words spoke to him, reminding him of the last few months he'd spent, urging himself, fighting to get out of his dark spot with all that he could. Hal gripped on the cuff of his shirt as the roar of applause filled the room, filling in the ringing in his ears.

He was one of the first half in the list, the crowd behind him still thick with other graduates like him, a few too eager and some a little overwhelmed. He schooled his face into a determined smile as he stepped up to the stage to claim his diploma, exchanging and handshake with the Headmistress, before looking back into the crowd, looking for a familiar sight in the sea faces.

For once, he wouldn't have his parents or close relative watching over him from the crowd as he stood on the stage but in that quick glance he took, he found a few friendly faces he'd met along the years and in that moment. He suddenly didn't feel too alone. As he stepped down the stage, he took one chance to wave towards his friends before blending back in with the rest.
