Ember stopped pacing for the moment and sat down on a nearby table, her back to Vince. She listened to him carefully, but hating every word he said. Why couldn't he just have forgotten her? She practically did, and then she wouldn't be in this mess. She could feel her eyes swell up with tears, but instantly wiped them away. Now was not the time to get emotional. Instead, Ember clenched her fists and banged them hard on the table, leaving small black burn marks on the surface.

Then something happened. Something that Vince had which really caught her attention. She was the first to what? She wanted to know. "No, say it. I was the first person to what?"

Hearing Ember's voice once again brought the words Vince was looking for directly to his mouth. He started his sentence again, just to make sure he still knew what he was talking about. "You were the first person to make me feel better about myself since... since my grandmother died. I already told you about her, didn't I?" Vince knew that this wouldn't help the situation get any better, but at least he could explain to her how his feelings first came along, but perhaps he wasn't clear enough. Or perhaps he didn't need to say anything more. Nevertheless, he continued. "That hug... I don't know how to explain, but it made me feel... sort of... like I wasn't alone anymore." Vince, you'll always be alone, no matter what.

Ember listened to him talk about how she made him feel. She did in fact remember him mentioning his grandmother, saying how sad he was and how he missed her. "Yeah, I remember her." She said in a low tone but still keeping her back to him. She listened to how she made him feel not so alone when she'd hugged him. So just because of their hug he believed he loved her? That didn't make much sense. Vince, the reason I hugged you was because I understood where you were coming from. I was being a friend to you, because that's what everyone needs: a friend."

Vince's mind was very muddled up after saying that last sentence, so when Ember said that she only hugged him as a friend, he felt even more confused, and a little bit embarrased. "I... never thought of it that way." He had urges to get that sword back out and just cut his arm off, but he thought better than to send himself to the Hospital Wing so soon after he got back. So instead, he just punched the floor. He wasn't angry, or upset, or even sad. He was just confused. He breathed for a moment after, and then said, "Sorry." Perhaps Ember was right. Before falling in love with someone, he needed a friend. "That's what's wrong with me. I have never had any friends." He collapsed against the wall, and clenched every muscle in his body. Ember's no longer angry, but his entire life was messed up from day one.

Ember looked at Vince, she could clearly tell he was embarrassed a bit, but she'd be the same way if she was in his shoes. When he apologized, she simply gave a small smile and said, "It's okay..." She slipped off of the table and took a few steps towards him but then backed away as he punched the floor. Then she continued to step closer to him and knelt down in from of him, sitting on her feet. "It's okay, Vince." She gave a low sigh and looked up at him. "At least you have one good friend, right?"
