Name of companion: Deacon
Name of character they're companion to: Dread Pirate Eloise
Age: 15
Birthday: ???
Gender: Male
Species: A regular crow familiar

Appearance Description:

Deacon is a regular crow. He doesn’t look any different from other crows, though he is notably handsome for his species – perhaps, his feathers are just a bit shinier and his beak just a bit sharper. When Eloise takes over Deacon’s consciousness, its eyes turn red with speckles of gold at the center, similar to Eloise’s eye.

Personality Description:

Deacon exhibits many traits crows are known for. Deacon is clever and curious. He’s able to understand how devices work, like doorknobs and levers, and uses it to his advantage. Deacon is also fun-loving – many of his actions are done for the express purpose of entertaining himself, like rolling down slopes of snow. He has a great love for humans that feed him and is known to offer them gifts. Deacon and Eloise are kindred spirits, which was why Deacon offered to be his familiar.

Deacon exhibits a greater intelligence than his fellow animals, but he’s not as smart as humans. His existence, priorities, and entire worldview depends entirely on what Eloise is concerned with. They have an almost unbreakable bond. Despite their bond, Deacon isn’t exactly known to be the best at giving advice. He likes to throw ideas at the wall, some of them good, many of them bad. Deacon’s priorities isn’t “is this a good idea?” it’s “is this a fun idea?” Deacon often enables Eloise’s bad ideas, which often lands Eloise in incredible danger/trouble. Eloise should really stop following his advice for his own safety, but they always sound so amazing, how could he not?

Deacon sometimes has a few nuggets of wisdom here and there, and he has animal instincts that could help out during high crisis situations. He can be useful. He just doesn’t want to be!

Powers/Species Abilities:

Familiar

Deacon, aside from his normal abilities as a regular bird, is also a familiar. Familiars are companion animals that help and guide their masters. As such, Deacon’s magic can help him communicate to Eloise, but only Eloise. Deacon’s squawking will register as regular speech to Eloise. Of course, people that can communicate with animals and other animals can talk to him too.

Mind Link

Deacon and Eloise’s minds are telepathically linked. They can’t reach other’s thoughts – though often, they can sense what the other is feeling by familiar cues – but they can send each other telepathic messages in a range as wide as 200km. More than that, the mind link is forcibly severed.

Eloise has a special power where he can control Deacon’s form, often so he could get a better view from the skies or sneak around to overhear conversations. However, while he’s taking over Deacon’s form, Eloise’s own body will be unconscious, like in a state of sleeping, and woefully vulnerable. He would have to do this lying down or propped up to something, preferably somewhere private or around people he trusts.

Conditional Invulnerability

Deacon’s life is connected to Eloise. As long as Eloise exists and is alive, Deacon will, too. The day Eloise dies, Deacon’s age and injuries will catch up to him in a rush and kill him on the spot.

Biography:

Eloise met Deacon somewhere in Shuwei city while he was docked there. He often fed the crows there with whatever food he had on his person for a few months, mostly because he thought it was adorable how they flocked around and expected to be fed. The crows returned the favor by bringing him gifts. One crow in particular, Deacon, brought him expensive jewelry. He ended up Eloise’s favorite out of the bunch.

For a few weeks, Deacon left his group to follow Eloise around. Eloise taught it to snatch pouches and necklaces. They were a terrible duo together, and they had some great times terrorizing and stealing people together. It was around that time Deacon decided, yes, this was his master.

One night, Deacon flew into Eloise’s room in his ship. He viciously pecked on his face until he woke up. It was then Deacon told him that he’d chosen him to be his master. Eloise freaked out about a talking bird at first, wondering if he was hallucinating, but after he calmed down, he got enthusiastic about the idea and adopted Deacon as his familiar.

Eloise was often ridiculed for having a non-standard familiar. Usually, mages would pick owls, cats, dogs, and rats, not a crow. Eloise responded to the ridicule with screaming and, depending on his levels of sobriety at the time, violence. They’ve been together for fifteen years, and Deacon has gotten Eloise as much trouble as he’s gotten him out of it.

When Eloise’s ship got destroyed by the hurricane and Eloise got transported to Manta Carlos, Deacon, of course, washed up on shore with him. Deacon is often found at Eloise’s shop, keeping on-guard in case of robbers or police officers.
