"I may? I wasn't aware you were my boss, or my king. I'm not your parent. If you want blood, go ask your vampire mother if you want to try some, but you aren't going to get any of mine." It was hard to tell, considering how strange Kiyomi acted, if she genuinely thought Tier was going to feed her because she was spoiled, or if she was simply trying to call his bluff.

"Vampire meat isn't any good to eat," Tier pointed out. "Most of it's rotten. Dead meat tends to go bad, and plenty of vampires dust if you kill them. They don't die naturally, either." No, vampire meat was almost a complete bust.

"I eat what I'm given, if that's what you're so scared of. I'm not going to break into your house for a taste of kitty cat. You never tasted that good to begin with."

“Then why?!”

It was her first genuine outburst. She hadn’t quite intended to let out the question, nor betray her frustration with an uneasy baring of her teeth, but there it happened. Kiyomi was plenty prone to impulse, but she desperately didn’t want to be like she had been at the trading post; a brainless, babbling, terrified ingenue.

Betraying that she knew she wasn’t actually much of a predator felt… dangerous. Even if the pretense obviously wasn’t working.

Well, too late to go back on it. “Why work with the bad people and eat us in the first place?” she elaborated, leaning forward with both elbows on the table, violating personal space a little more than she’d been told was nice. “Why— why be mean, and scary, and lurk in the shadows, and, and, just— ughh! Kiyomi doesn’t get it. You, you are bad. Bad man. But, you’re here now? They let you be here now? And it’s fine? Why?!

In another situation, he might have had to put genuine effort into coming up with a response. But the truth was that Kiyomi had handed him the answer he needed on a platter. He didn't have to try and explain things. He didn't have to work out how to explain, or decide if he even should explain. Why work with the bad people?

So he put on a mildly hurt look and went to town.

"I didn't know you hated your mama so much, Kiyomi. I'm sure she'd be awfully upset to hear that. After all, she's a predator too, isn't she? She feeds on humans just the same as I do. We're no different, so if you hate me, you must feel the same way about her, don't you?"
