・・ APPEARANCE ・・

The first words people ever really say when defining Charles' appearance is beautiful, radiant, or enchanting. All of which are technically true. Charles has this certain beauty that just turns a lot of heads towards him, a certain glow that leaves most wondering is this person for real. Well, he is real, but honestly, it's best to just pay attention to his looks for the mean time. Whether his beauty comes naturally, or it's from his angelic nature, no one actually could tell, and Charles wouldn't say either.

Charles could be described to be an angelic beauty, his skin is soft and fair, a bit of a button nose, nicely arched eyebrows, and cheeks seem to be constantly dusted with a rosy blush. His hair is a golden shade of blonde, falling in soft waves but cut short at the back as it gradually lengthens towards the front so that it frames his face. The right side appears longer than the other. He has beautiful blue eyes in the color of the sky that seem to glimmer whenever light reflects into it, long feather-like lashes decorating it, along with a serene smile that's rather calming to those who witness it. That's mostly just his default expression though; any thing outside of that seems a little less serene and a little more infuriating.

He's not a particularly large fellow — in fact, he has a rather petite frame, and his natural height is only of 5'2 ft, but almost all of his shoes add at least 2 inches into his height, either by pump heels or just straight up 4-inch platform boots. His daily attire is considered formal, often reminiscent of European fashion of the 19th century, worn in cool tones for the most part, with hints of neutral. A staple arrangement of his outfit is a dress shirt and matching waistcoat and slacks. At work, he wears a white doctor's coat over his ensemble. On the colder days, he would even wear an overcoat to fend off the cool winds when outdoors.

As a common trait for angels, Charles possesses a set of feathered wings that's really just made out of light, which can be visible to people and also concealed when needed. These wings appear in a beautiful ivory white color and are intangible to most by touch, with exception to angels, deities, and demons. Charles has three pairs, but only the middle pair are considered functional if they ever get to be fully healed. The other two are notably smaller with respect to his body with the upper pair appearing small and stubby, while the lower pair appear narrow and elongated that reach down to the back of his shin, creating the shape of a swallow tail when all are extended.

・・ PERSONALITY ・・

Charles is what most people would classify as an egomaniac with no regard for anyone but himself. It wouldn't be too far from the truth, in fact. If being able to make things all about oneself was some form of special ability, Charles would definitely have it. His mindset is entirely "me! me! me!" and he can make things relevant to himself be all about him. He has a tendency to claim being victim as well, which most definitely does not add any more to his already crumbling charm.

He's also the kind of person who knows what he wants. And what he wants, he would strive to get, with indeed, almost no regard for the other person. If he wants things to go his way, he would go lengths to do that, even if the next person isn't as enthusiastic about the prospect. He's rather stubborn in almost anything, deeming himself to be correct at generally all possible instances. Charles also tends to think that his perspective is almost always superior to the other and there is no better truth than his own.

He's impulsive when it comes to decision-making, relying mostly on his intuition rather than sound judgment most of the time. Following all these traits, Charles is a little more than just a bit misguided in these aspects. Most of the time he would need someone to guide him to the right direction — that is, if he's willing enough to listen.

On a more professional scenario, Charles shows himself to be more effective. His intuitive nature makes him rather a quick-witted individual. He is quick to move and respond to emergencies, making him a very efficient person in his field of work. Objectively speaking, of course. Carrying over his drive from his past life, as well as his dedication as an angel of healing and medicine, Charles is focused and driven when it comes to performing his job. He might have a lacking in terms of social skills, but he does well in the work place.

Speaking of social skills, it's not his strong suit at all. Charles is what everyone would think as eccentric though it my as well be due to his inhuman nature. He tends to do things 'normal people shouldn't', societal norms go over his head, despite him being over 200, personal bubbles are certainly not a thing with this one and he can't understand why you won't love him the way he deserves. He's not particularly violent — in fact, he leans towards the pacifist side of the scale but he does get a bit too aggressive. He approaches most people with a level of politeness that sometimes just borders to sarcasm at a few instances. He may be a little pushy, but it's out of character for him to harm anyone unprovoked.

On the flip side of things, he also doesn't understand how relationships really work in general. It's difficult for him to make deeper connections in general because while he has a firm belief that people do in fact like him, he isn't capable of full understanding how affection works. Charles ends up keeping people at arms length; he doesn't get attached to anyone, perhaps the only exception was first mortal he met after being exiled and even he doesn't truly understand the depth of that relationship. He lets people assume they were romantically involved even though he isn't too sure about it.

In terms of skills and interests, it wouldn't be too much of a stretch that Charles is a skilled medical practitioner. Literally an angel presiding over the aspect of life, his entire existence as an angel is dedicated to healing and medicine so his familiarity with this field is more than sufficient. Add to the fact that he has in fact completed units to have a specialization in the medical field, it's kind of hard to question how much skill Charles could possibly have as a doctor.

Outside of the medical field on the other hand, Charles has a few life skills to boast. Cooking on his own has become a requirement for him, but he could admit at least that he wouldn't be the best at it. Right next to his medical skills, cleaning would probably be next on the list of his top skills, with gardening running third. Half of Charles' time has been dedicated to his little garden on his front yard since he had moved back into the island. He treats it as a therapeutic activity when he wants to keep away from people. While it might be an exaggeration to say he has a green thumb, Charles takes special care with his collection, tending to his garden everyday without fail. Any other hobby that had ever caught his interest would be lost into the years past.

・・ POWERS ・・

Healing Magic

As an angel of Healing and Medicine, Charles has the ability to use healing magic but having been exiled has crippled this. At his current station as an independent angel without a patron god, his abilities are significantly weaker. His healing magic back then was considered the strongest among his fellows in terms of power and efficiency.

At the moment, his magic can heal up to some major injuries that are not considered to be fatal, all with a significant amount of time and a degree of difficulty. He can continue to heal major injuries (injuries that may become fatal if untreated with extended time) in succession up to a full day, but by the end of it he would have exhausted himself. Attempting to heal a person with a fatal injury exhausts his power to a point that he can't make use of it at all until after he replenishes all his magic reserves. Cool down for this attempt usually takes at least 20 hours and within this time frame, he is known to suffer exhaustion. He could try saving a dying person, but he would be pushing past his limit. When he does, he could faint and even fall into a coma at the worst case scenario, with lasting effects of fatigue upon waking up .

Part of his original magic is being able to rejuvenate the energy of all walks of life by converting the energy from natural sources such as flowing water, the sun and the moon — the current state of this power now makes this tedious process that puts him in a state of disorientation or nausea after use, affecting his judgement as well as the ability to make use of his magic. He can heal common illnesses like colds and fevers, but diseases as serious as tuberculosis and the like, as well as chronic ailments are already beyond his current power. Any form of reanimation is already beyond his abilities, even at full power, and he cannot bring back the dead.

As one who presides over medicine, his power also includes granting him the ability to create potent mixtures that is considered traditional medicine — this is the only thing he believes he can still do to its full potential since he uses the energies and materials around him. With this ability, he can brew mixtures that can be used as healing agents in the form of oils, powder, or tonics. Tonics are often drank, and depending on the mix may have the power to rejuvinate one person to their peak form, reduce muscle pain, migraines, or simply to energize an individual in an effect similar to caffeine (minus the subsequent crash). Oils are more often than not applied over wounds which can heal without almost any trace of scarring, but it also can be applied to reduce muscle pain, swelling, and even rashes. Powders can be applied either way though mixing into food or making it into paste for external application.

・・ SPECIES ABILITIES ・・

Angel

Charles is known to be immortal and would not die by natural causes or fatal injuries. He can never be sick, especially of common diseases, nor would he be inconvenienced by toxins (alcohol and poisons) in his body, but he is not completely invulnerable to injury. Because of his nature as an angel presiding over the aspect of Life, he is more capable of recovering through most damages done to his body quicker than most of his kind. He almost cannot die by any means as his injuries heal almost instantaneously: fatal wounds or damage to internal organs could take him just a day or two and he would be fine; incinerating his body would take him a week and no more than 10 days and he'll be back in top shape; cutting off a limb takes him three to five days to get them back to normal.

Unless of course, if the injury is inflicted by Holy Magic then his recovery time would be exponentially slower — if his body were to be destroyed entirely with pure Holy Magic, it can ultimately kill him. Holy Magic in the sense of people from his world has higher effectiveness based on faith and with Charles being an angel, its effects are come very strongly for him. Magic with Dark or Demonic affinity also causes high damage of just the same degree.

Items of Holy nature that are not intended to harm him won't have any negative effect but if they are used against him, it can result with lasting damages. Being in the presence of these objects or in a place of faith (like shrines and places of worship) puts him in a sense of serenity and peace. On the other hand, any item with dark or demonic properties can cause discomfort merely by presence alone. He can stand next to a demon without much trouble, but if they happen to emit any sort of aura, it puts him in a very bad place that's similar to being sick for as long as he is exposed to them. Elemental magic just a few degrees of advantage over what physical damage could inflict to him and that isn't very much.

All angels of his realm have wings, differing in number and size depending which class they fall into the hierarchy --in any of these cases, they are given the ability of flight. These wings are generally made of light and can be concealed when blending among mortals, as in the case with Charles. With his wings having been burnt off from his exile, it had lost its functionality and cannot be used. They appear to have reformed at the very least but it still hasn't fully healed due to the nature of the injury after being scorched by Holy Magic.

In its fully functional state, his wings are strong enough to take him to great distances, with speed comparable to that of a hawk and a considerable air-based agility. Now though, Charles has so much difficulty in moving it around that there isn't really a good chance of him being able to use it at all. The only way they could be healed is that if a healer with god-like abilities chooses to fix it for him, or he swears fealty to another deity that would could give him enough power to heal completely.

An angel without a place in the authorities, or loyalties to any deity is known to be weaker than those with ones as it is known that having favors from deities give them more power. This is why Charles' abilities are only really half of what he could actually do compared to when he was in heaven with in service to a deity. As an angel of his realm, the types magic that would truly have the strongest effect on him are those Holy (or Light), Demonic or Dark.

・・ BIOGRAPHY ・・

Charles' origins go back into a hundred years ago: they were born human as Charlot Haprele, a child with such exceptional beauty known to man, to loving and hardworking parents who would have given anything for them to be happy and well. There wasn't quite a lot to say about their mortal life other than how humbling it had been. Their parents weren't anything more than simple peddlers, no siblings to speak of and they all had to work to get by everyday. Life slowly became more and more difficult as the years went by though, because as Charlot got older, their health dwindled.

Charlot was 9 when their struggles started to take a nose dive. A month wouldn't pass by that they wouldn't fall ill, whether it was something as a common cold, or a high fever. They didn't let any of these get in the way and kept working through as long as his body could permit it. Their parents wouldn't have any and oftentimes, it became a topic for an argument. Charlot told them they couldn't just stand by without doing anything. Twelve was the last birthday they were ever able to spend with their family; only a month after, Charlot fell gravely ill — incurable with the medicine they had during the time. Life wasn't too kind for them, despite all the effort. Charlot died at the age of 12 in their home, with only their parents at their side.

For reasons beyond their understanding, they were taken by angels upon death and brought to live among them. On their ascension, they were given the name Clarence. They were hailed as a new angel to serve a minor god presiding over Healing and Medicine. Now an angel, Clarence dedicated all their time and effort to their cause. They were highly favored by many, god and angels alike, and beloved by their own god. Clarence eventually earned the title of 'Angel of the Cure' as a gift of their devotion and loyalty.

Clarence couldn't have asked for anything more and they lived a good life among the angels. They were acknowledged for their good deeds and dedication their duties; never falling short of praise and admiration. They got to live decades in such good standing and for a while, it was peaceful. Nothing could have possibly made life difficult for Clarence. It was sometimes hard to imagine how things could have turned out the way they had.

When asked, Clarence always skimmed over how they ended up on earth from there on, and they never liked detailing it to anyone who dared to ask.

It wasn't anything sudden, but that was what made it more difficult for Clarence. Another deity found interest in them, the God of War and Fire — a deity of the highest order and offered for them to swear loyalties to them instead. Now, normally, most angels would find it a blessing and choose not to deny the will of a higher being but Clarence wasn't one of those angels and effectively turned them down.

Clarence had grown to become a stubborn one, and declared they would rather stay by their Goddess' side as this is what they believe they were meant for — not for the fires of battle. They wouldn't say it aloud though, but they also held a particular dislike for the court of Fire and War — the angels didn't seem to regard them the way others would. There was a certain gleam in their eyes that made Clarence uncomfortable. And this, they regard, became the first mistake they would make in their lifetime.

For those who believed heaven was a wondrous place of only peace and joy, of no tears or suffering whatsoever, Clarence would have to disagree. The months following wouldn't be any different from how it would have been like to oppose a higher power on the mortal realm. Other angels looked at them and shook their heads, some whispered among themselves, while others refused to meet their gaze. Other gods seem to look at them with pity. Clarence thought they could simply end things if they sought council with their Goddess and asked for her wisdom but neither she could give them the guidance they needed.

It came to the point they had to request an audience with the God of War to settle it. They were given an option: to swear loyalties, or to have none at all. Clarence chose to stand their ground and again refused the god. This was the last mistake Clarence ever made in heaven and it came with a bigger price.

Exile had apparently been on the table, but the God of War wasn't kind enough to let them leave with nothing else on their shoulders. Or rather, the god wasn't kind enough to let them leave with anything on their shoulders. Clarence's wings were burned before they were sent away, leaving them with so much pain to bear as they were banished and left to wander. Not even their healing magic could cure them of it. They found themselves driven away into an unfamiliar realm of mortals, disoriented with the injury but also the change in surroundings.

A woman who went by the name Eloise Castello found them and took them in, thinking they were simply a confused stranger at first. She was a strange woman to most people, an eccentric; but she and Clarence met at a common ground as she helped him adjust to living with mortals. Their time together was short-lived though; she would eventually send off Clarence based on a terrible premonition if they were to stay together. It was the last they ever heard of her. With no one to lean on, Clarence continued forward and stumbled his way through the decades to come.

It wasn't too hard, they would like to claim: the mortal realm was where they'd come from. It was so much easier said than done in reality. The following decades had been daunting; having spent their years in heaven made it difficult to live among mortals, let alone to have to survive with them on their own. Their neutral nature towards mortals made it difficult for Clarence to find their place among the crowd and their lack of knowledge of mortal necessities often put them out of place. In the years to come, all these troubles did come shape Clarence to become the person they are now. And that took a little more than a couple of decades.

Clarence, or rather, Charles Castello as they go by now, found their way to Manta Carlos about 20 years ago through a few connections they made over the years to finish their education and eventually become licensed but they came and went through the island, until settling for good only 7 years ago.

・・ ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ・・

  • Charles is essentially from another realm, not necessarily a different planet, where angels and demons are opposing forces for balance and keeping mortal layers (one of which is theoretically the 'layer' where Manta Carlos sits in) a neutral ground.
  • Charles doesn't like the term "fallen angel" as he believes this refers to angels who rebelled against the Laws that govern their realm and has fallen from grace; he firmly insists on his status as exiled simply for refusing to have loyalties to any higher power.
