Fully aware of the fact that wildlife filled these woods, William landed as softly as possible. The wings on his back quickly dissipated as to not burn any trees in the surrounding area. Almost immediately, he was enveloped in the sounds of nature, drinking in the wonderful noises gratefully.
Eager to find something new, Will marched forward... and quickly realized that he had no idea what he was looking for. It had been a spontaneous plan, spurred by the book he had recently read on reptiles, but based on what he read, there would be no reptiles in this forest. He then decided to search for the second best thing: a small animal with wings and curious beady eyes.
"Bird." The word seemed to tickle his lips, and he smiled subconsciously.
As if on cue, a strange, whistling noise found its way to Will's ears. He nearly jumped, but calmed himself down upon realizing that sound was surely made by a bird. His body twisted around in search of the creature, an sure enough, there was a small bird, perched on the branch of a tree and gazing at him curiously.
Although Will had seen birds before, he had never seen one up close. His mind went on autopilot and, in a sudden burst of excitement, he leapt toward the winged animal. Unfortunately, the bird was scared by this movement and flew away, and more birds followed along with. Will's excitement skyrocketed--that is, until one of the birds ungracefully slammed into Will's face.
The boy shook is head violently and, without being able to see where he was going, slammed his head into the branch. This resulted in a hard slam to the forest floor and a very quick headache. William moaned in pain, the back of his hands glowing brightly.
