Sitting on her aunt’s sofa, Zoraida sipped at her hot drink grateful to her aunt for just being home at this time of day. She knew it was an extremely weird hour but she had just come back from seeing the lawyers from the reading of Tomas’s will and quite surprisingly he had left everything, except a few things, to her. And what was more surprising is that he had actually made real investments and was way wealthier than she had ever suspected or known. All of this had thrown her for a loop and only hastened her decision to make a change in her life as it were.
“What’s up?” Celeste asked as she folded herself in the armchair across from her niece.
“Today was Tomas’s will reading,” Zora told her aunt.
“Really? And..” Celeste asked somewhat surprised.
“And he left almost everything to me,” she told her aunt still sort of marvelling at this, not sure if that was a good or bad thing considering everything between them.
“Ohh..” Celeste said sitting up in her chair, “Everything?”
Zora nodded at this, “Almost everything…”
“Wow…” Celeste said almost in disbelief, “And what are you going to do? Invest it? Sell off his properties?”
Here Zora shrugged helplessly. “I don’t know… It’s just… too much, everything is too much.” she confessed. “I have too much.. It’s like.... What am I even working towards?” she asked Celeste, closing her eyes and sighing.
“I cannot do it anymore…” she confessed, “I am tired, it’s not fun or rewarding. It’s just accumulating wealth, more and more wealth. There is no satisfaction in it anymore, not in Woodland, not in DB Holdings, none of it makes me happy anymore, and it’s all beginning to be too much. I want…” here she stopped, uncertain about voicing what she wanted.
“Zori…” Celeste said very gently as she leant over and grabbed her hand.
“I cannot do it anymore aunty, I can’t…” Zora said finally breaking down. “I am not happy doing what I do. I get no satisfaction from it. It’s something I’m good at but… “ here she squeezed her aunts hand, “I just need a change… I want to do something different, something for others…” she confessed thinking about the two boys, Tadashi and Ethan, she had decided to help swim and how good that had felt, how satisfying...fulfilling.
“Okay,” Celeste said with concern. “So... what do you want to do, and what about your company?” she asked pointing out the obvious.
“The company is easy, I can just hire somebody I trust to run it if I have to, or sell it, I have more money than anyone ever really needs,” she stated, not exactly worried about that since she had enough money for twenty lifetimes and this was without exaggerating.
Nodding at that, she knew that part was true, though it still surprised Celeste how much her niece had managed to accumulate over the years through investments and through her business.
“Alright, so what do you want to do?”
“I am not sure yet,” Zora confessed, “but I did have the best time ever teaching two young men to swim. It was the most gratifying thing I done in a while.” she admitted thoughtfully.
“I can’t really explain it, aunt Cici, but I really enjoyed helping them out. In fact, I’ve agreed to continue with the lessons…” she told her aunt.
