Name: Amali Mackenzie
Age: 13
Birthday: unknown date, 2003
Gender: female
Species: Half-Sylph
Category: Student
Class: Middle School (remedial lessons)
Grade: 6

Appearance Description:
Amali is very small for her age, and very light, due to malnutrition. Her skin is very pale, but not fragile as one might expect, unlike her bones which are not as strong as they might have been had she grown up under different circumstances. All across her shoulders, back, and legs are covered in scar tissue, revealing the torment of her captivity.
Her hair is a dark purplish-blue, reminiscent of the distant sea, or the center blue of an iceberg, and hangs down to her waist. Amali's eyes are only a few shades darker than her hair, and shine like galaxies whenever she learns something new.
She holds herself with a tall posture, shoulders back and head held high, however when she thinks no one is watching she loses her prideful posture and gains a more subservient one.
On a regular day, Amali wears a short skirt, generally in dark blues or other cool colours, and always with a bit of lace or ruffles. Her shirts are generally lighter, pastel colours to contrast with her skirts, often but not always with cute designs on them. Amali's general footwear is sneakers, with knee-high patterned socks or stockings. As expected, she does wear her school uniform in perfect condition when necessary.

Personality Description:
Amali is very reserved and withholds her judgments until someone is clearly either good or bad. She herself tries to be good, however she acknowledges the fact that the right way may not always be the 'good' way. To her, fighting is necessary for survival, however violence is an unnecessary cruelty that is unacceptable.
Amali has vast amounts of patience, rivaled only by her vast amounts of spirit. Her presence in a room is hard to miss, but she doesn't like being the center of attention. In fact, being the center of attention puts her on edge and extremely nervous.
Once comfortable with the people around her, she can be rather chipper and sweet, and loves showing off and sharing the treats she bakes with her adoptive mother.
Her lack of voice complicates her ability to communicate, but she's still learning. She often makes mistakes in her signing without noticing, so it’s easier for her to rely on her drawing skills.
Amali was not given an education as a slave, so she started with remedial lessons with the school before joining a class. This was not quite enough to get her up to par with the other students her age, so her remedial lessons will continue through a second year in the same grade level.

Likes:
  • Birds: Amali has always envied the freedom a bird has, unbound by land or humans.
  • Family: Amali has dreamt of a family her whole life, and although she doesn't admit it, she longs to have one.
  • Wind and Sky: Amali owes her life to the spirits of the wind for saving her life, if not her voice. She reveres the wind like a god, in memory of the being that saved her.
  • Pirates: Her new dad is a pirate! She’s so excited to grow up and be like him.
  • Baking: Amali loves learning to bake with her mother, and can’t get enough of it.
Dislikes:
  • Large Dogs: they remind her of a past full of monsters, which she really wants to forget.
  • Violent People: Another thing that reminds her of a past she wants to remember, however acts of violence are very much against her moral codes.
  • Dishonesty: regardless of how much damage revealing the truth might cause, lying is never an option
  • 'baser desires': not only does it distract one from the task at hand, it's just gross. Amali can't even stand watching couples kiss.
Fears:
  • Captivity: having escaped from imprisonment once, Amali has consistent nightmares of being recaptured, or having never left.
  • Claustrophobia: Amali has been locked and tortured in small rooms- any room at all where she can't immediately leave when she wants to will cause small panic attacks if she stays for too long.
  • Storms: Amali has never liked storms, but after having traveled over seas, they will never be anything but terrifying
  • Monsters in the Closet: Many children have fears of unknown scary monsters hiding in the dark, including Amali who has seen some of these monsters.
  • Older Students: they’re so tall and so scary! Amali doesn’t like talking to them, except the nice ones that help her reach books in the library

Powers: N/A

Species Abilities.
Unknown to Amali, the wind-bird blessed her with some of his powers, making her half-sylph.
Sylphs are fey creatures that manipulate the skies, appearing as if made of clouds or wind. Out of all powers they use, Amali has gained control of the west winds, creating a warm, gentle breeze when she’s happy. In following with the concept of Zephyrus the greek west wind, Amali’s wind ‘brings forth the spring’. Plants caught in it tend to grow faster and produce more beautiful fruit, while people caught in the breeze are filled temporarily with an unexplainable contentedness.
Her winds can still be dangerous, if she gets too upset she could cause rather large storms, even tornadoes if she’s having some kind of crisis. The likelihood of these storms harming anyone are typically slim, however they will throw around loose objects and, worst of all, give people a semi permanent bad hair day.

Biography:
Amali doesn’t remember where she was born, or even the name of the place she had been living in for ten years. She was kidnapped from her home at the age of three, thankfully oblivious to the knowledge that her parents were dead soon after.
From such a young age, she was raised and abused, treated like property to be bought and sold from noble to noble, or more specifically, anyone with enough money who wanted to be treated like one. She prayed every night to any higher being that would listen to be given a chance to escape and find her family. Every morning for six years she woke up still a slave to a greedy or violent person. Every night for those six years she fell asleep crying. It wasn't until at the end of those six years that she was given a way out. She had been sold to someone on the eastern side of the continent, and was transported across land with a dozen other slaves.
One night while the group was sleeping, something responded to Amali's plea for help. A large bird made of silver wind visited in her dreams and healed her wounds.
This repeated every night after she prayed: the bird would arrive in her dreams and heal her wounds and ailments as she slept, which continued on for three years. This arose suspicion with other slaves, and with the man who had bought her. She was watched while she slept, until the wind bird arrived. Enraged by how she was getting special treatment while they suffered, some of the slaves attacked the wind bird while others took Amali and attempted to slit her throat.
The wind bird, being a powerful magic beast, fought off its attackers easily, then went immediately to Amali's side. She was still clinging to life when the bird found her, and she was healed quickly before the large bird swept up with her to the sky.
The bird left her on an island not too far from Manta Carlos with a parting gift: the ability to use its own magic. He, knowing the follower of the Pirate Queen frequented the island, left her asleep in the warm sand with one of its large feathers spread across her like a blanket. He sung to the slumbering child until a boat came into sight, then flew into the sky in a dramatic departure.

Amali was adopted by Grant Mackenzie, an instructor at Starlight Academy. She’s been in remedial lessons at the academy, slowly catching up to her fellow students.

Additional Information: Amali’s vocal chords are damaged, and she cannot speak. She’s been learning sign language, but is not fluent yet, so she depends more on a portable whiteboard and a text-to-speech program. The combination of these three allow her to communicate with minimal misunderstandings.
