He's certainly not difficult to spot in a crowd, standing around a head taller than most boys his age, and complementing that with a rigid, upright, almost even cocky posture. His complexion is a lively pinkish peach, littered with constellations of freckles, free from marks and scars save for his hands which are calloused and cut with the remnants of minor burns on his fingers.
In contrast to his fair skin, his hair is a mess of thick, inky black curls that he keeps short to keep manageable. His eyes are, in dull lighting, a neutral grey not much different from the color of a looming raincloud. Closer inspection, however, will reveal that they're actually a light icy blue, in quite the striking shade.
His features are long and sharp, his face is narrow with a smoothed-out jawline leading to a prominent chin. His cheekbones are equally noticeable, adding an angular quality to his face. His nose is long and thin, widening near the tip. His eyes aren't quite almond-shaped, but neither are they rounded and wide. They're smaller, giving him the aura of a boy much older and more mature than he really is.

"It's lonely at the top." Words Alexei would, no doubt, be caught reminding himself. These words accurately sumarize him, and just how he sees himself. He's a competent, independent and intelligent young man who has achieved much, starting from the very bottom and, boy, does he know it. Most of the time, sometimes even inadvertently, he views others as lazy or stupid, and has trouble relating to the problems of his peers or giving advice to them. As such, he doesn't have many friends, and those that he regularly interacts with are more of co-workers to him than companions.
Powers:
Temperature manipulation: He has the ability to alter the temperatures around him, but is bound by the law of energy conservation: Energy cannot be created nor destroyed. As such, he is only able to control the flow of heat. This is limited to a small radius around him (about 3m) and as the distance increases, the concentration and skill needed to manipulate heat increases exponentially. This makes it extremely inefficient to use his power nearing the ends of his effect radius.
General Uses: He can, for example, heat up a glass of water using the heat energy within the room. He can get the water to boil, but the room temperature will consequently drop. More extreme changes in temperature will more easily wear him out.
Creating Fire: Fire is created with fuel, oxygen and heat. In a world where the first two are in great abundance, starting a fire is not a difficult task for Alexei. Raising an object's temperature to ignition temperature will be enough, and fire will sustain itself.
Stopping Fire: Directing heat away from a fire will stop the reaction occuring. Alexei can utilize this to snuff out fires, however fires of a larger scale can be a problem because of his small effect radius.

Alexei was born in a small village, to a seamstress and a magician from a travelling circus who finally decided to give up magic and settle down. However, one night, when Alexei was seven, his father left home and never returned. Their lives after that were not easy as his mother was quite sickly. Alexei earned money for his family by selling matches. Only a little over a year later, his mother caught a terminal illness and died, leaving Alexei orphaned and living on the streets. Hoping to find a place where he could be more than a homeless urchin, he made his way to the city.
The city was nothing he'd ever imagined. It was a huge, looming monster full of dangerous people, dangerous places and dangerous situations. The streets of the city were full of orphaned children, just like him, stealing, begging and selling to eke out a living. It was in this horrid environment that Alexei developed his habit of "lighting." When he was stressed, he'd find a dark corner and start lighting his matches, one by one, watching the flame, awestruck.
One winter night, when Alexei was eleven, he was crouched in a dark alley, lighting up matches, imagining they were warding away the cold of winter. Without realizing it, he had dropped a match, and it started a great fire, consuming everything around him. The last thing he remembered thinking of was how the flickering tongues of flame reminded him so much of his mother's golden hair, and its engulfing heat of her warm embrace.
He was found by authorities in the rubble, no harm done to his skin, but passed out because of the lack of oxygen. He was taken in by a nearby hospital and questioned by a kind but intimidating inspector, whom he formed a brief but close relationship with. At the end of it, the inspector left Alexei his lighter, and it has since been his "lucky lighter." The inspector reported his findings to the government and Alexei was given to the care of a well-to-do elderly gentleman. Fearing for his new adopted son's safety, the elderly gentleman left the country before the government could get their hands on Alexei.
The gentleman, although he had no powers, was a very supportive guardian and played a vital part in Alexei's discovery of his powers. He payed for Alexei's education, which he worked hard and excelled in, especially Chemistry. At this point in time, Alexei had a proper grasp on how to utilize and control his temerature manipulation powers, and was a very well-read and well-educated young boy.
Just before he turned fifteen, his guardian died of old age and it was in his will to send Alexei to Starlight Academy.

Heat Immunity: His body can absorb an indefinite amount of temperature and not burn or melt or cause pain. Thus, fires, boiling water and heated metals do not harm him. He isn't immune to the loss of heat, though, so he can still freeze to death or die of hypothermia.
