What an exciting first few weeks Anna had been having! She had a new job, a handful of new friends, a new realization of the powers that she held within her being, and her new life just seemed to be going...almost perfectly. She sat in her room and gushed to her brothers over Skype about how great everything had been. In return, they expressed their excitement for the adoption process that their foster parents were moving forward with.

Beside her laptop, Anna's phone buzzed. She glanced at it, then back to her screen. "Oh! Sorry, guys, I've gotta head out. I'm supposed to be meeting Sarah soon. I'll talk to you later, okay?" She blew kisses and expressed her good-byes before hanging up, shutting the laptop, and gathering her things. She'd bought enough groceries to make her favorite pasta salad, since she had promised Sarah that she'd do some cooking for her in return for letting her practice her powers.

Anna breezed out the door with bags in hand and headed down the steps of the dorm building to wait for Sarah to come and pick her up. She bounced on her toes with excitement. This was going to be such a good day!

Sarah had cleared up her schedule to accommodate the plans she and Anna set for another practice session. The scientist had readied everything she'd need for today, and drove off in a car that was provided with the mansion she was sent to. It was jet black with dark windows, probably something that might raise eyebrows if stopped at a school to wait for a student. The license plates were legit however and registered to her, so at least that would give her some for of credit, not that it mattered to her.

She was dressed more like a secretary, with some slacks and a blazer, her eye glasses adding the final touch. She felt uneasy going out with casual clothes. She needed something that would cover her as much as possible, so she defaulted to the kind of clothing she now wore. It did give her a more professional demeanor. Who knows, maybe someone might mistake her as someone who works in the academy.

The car rolled up where she and Anna were to meet. Sarah was pleased to see that Anna wasn't one to be late. Flicking a switch, the window on the passenger's side rolled down smoothly with a gentle whir. Sarah leaned a little over and smiled. "I hope I didn't keep you waiting."

Sarah's familiar fancy car rolled up to the Academy right on time. "Not at all," she grinned in response and bounced over to hop in. She put the two bags of groceries down by her feet and smoothed out the skirt of her light blue halter-top dress, printed with large sunflowers. Together, they looked more like a mother and daughter than two friends, with Sarah in her mature, business-like getup. Anna pulled the seat belt over her shoulder and lap and clicked it into place.

"I got stuff to make pasta salad. I used to cook for my brothers a lot when we were growing up, since I'm kind of a big sister and mom in one to them," her voice was full of fondness with the memories of spending time in the kitchen. "My mom was a really good cook. She had written down a lot of different recipes before she died." Anna had learned most of them by heart by now, but she still kept them tucked away in a little notebook that sat on her desk, next to a picture of her full family, a photo that had been taken a few weeks before the crash.

Sarah looked at the groceries Anna brought with her. She could spy some pasta in there, so it would make sense to have a dish based on that. She doubted anyone would just bring that along to throw people off.

Once Anna was settled in and buckled, Sarah rolled up the passenger window and they set off on the road back to the mansion. She wondered if Anna would be surprised about that fact. "You should find everything you need to cook whatever you have planned. The kitchen is stocked, and I'm sure there are more things you can use in storage."

Sarah kept her eyes on the road, looking out for people, jaywalkers and other vehicles. Despite not going out much, she's actually a good driver. Maybe call it a natural instinct, but there's no augmentation in place that helps her to drive. She does have a GPS on the dashboard for directions, but that's pretty much it. Plans to modify the car have been made, but Sarah never got around to it yet. "How are you liking your stay in the island so far?"

Anna was happy to hear that Sarah's kitchen was good and stocked. She was bound to have fun going through everything that the kitchen featured, from pots and pans to spices and herbs. She was bound to get creative with this dish, with all of the extras that were likely to be on hand. This pasta salad would be something special. She was even more excited to cook for Sarah now.

She kept an eye on the road as well, mostly out of habit. It wasn't difficult to see that Anna was a little tense when it came to riding in cars. That was how her family had been taken from her. One drive had changed her entire life forever. She always wished that it could have been different, but one couldn't change the past, only shape the future. She had to always remind herself of that.

She started to tell Sarah about how her time on the island had been when a driver in the oncoming lane who was texting suddenly swerved into them. All Anna had time to do was gasp. She couldn't even brace herself for the impact.

Everything happened so fast. There was the awful sound of metal hitting metal and the car flipped and tumbled, the airbag deploying and hitting Anna in the face, dazing her. The next thing she was aware of was a great pain in her left leg. Anna screamed. The car was upside-down, and the interior had crushed down onto her, crunching her bones. The pain radiated everywhere. A glass jar that had been in the bags at her feet broke open and shards flew everywhere, one slicing into her cheek. Everything was spinning. Her vision blurred wildly as she tried to wriggle herself free of the wreckage and screamed again from the immense pain of her now-broken leg.

Sarah never let her eyes stray from the road. That was always an important thing. It lowered the chances of accidents and hitting pot holes that might damage the car. Unfortunately, no matter how careful you were, someone who isn't paying attention to the road can still drag you into accidents.

On this road, the cars were allowed to go a little fast, so when an oncoming car suddenly swerved into their lane, it was almost impossible to dodge it, although Sarah did turn her car so that she would be closer the impact in an attempt to protect her passenger. She felt the two forces hit, before the airbags deployed. The car flipped and skidded. For a moment, Sarah lost consciousness and came to when the sound of Anna screaming reached her ringing ears.

She reached for something behind the airbags, a button that, when she pressed it, caused the doors to forcefully eject, providing a wide exit. It wasn't until now when she noticed the blood running to her head that they were upside down.

By now, people have gathered around to help them. A few teenagers were the first to get to them, cutting the seat belts so they could be dragged out of the wreck. When she was pulled out, she could feel the pain coursing through her body. Her only organic limb seemed to be fine, only getting cuts and bruises, maybe a sprained ankle too but she couldn't tell at the moment, but it didn't look broken, which was a relief.

She looked back at the wreck, looking for any sign of Anna. The people helping her had taken all the groceries out first, and straightened out a part of the chassis to free her leg before taking her out. The commotion suggested that she was alive, but Sarah couldn't see what her state was, being blocked by the wreck and the people trying to help them.

The smell of iron was definitely not from the cars, evident by the red stains on the clothes of the people who were helping her. Sarah's eyes were barely open and she couldn't move. The effects of adrenaline kept her from feeling too much pain, but she was having some difficulty breathing. Hopefully she didn't have any broken ribs, but honestly, a crash like that was bound to give her several. In the distance, Sarah could hear the ambulance coming. The wails grew closer yet at the same time, they became foggier. She found it hard to stay awake. She felt the moment she was picked up, but everything after that was black, save for the few moments she drifted back to consciousness only to go unconscious again.

Anna started to drift in and out, the pain and loss of blood causing her to lose consciousness despite her fighting efforts. Oh god. She was dying. Why did dying have to hurt so much? This was it. She didn't want to go. She had so much left to do, so much...her brothers...the world swirled and all of the noises were muffled and distorted and someone shouted at her to stay awake while she was pulled from the wreckage. There was a siren somewhere. Her eyes grew heavy and slid closed.

Beep. Beep. Beep. Beep.

At first, she thought it was her alarm going off. Anna groaned and opened her eyes, squinting against the bright white light. What time was it? More importantly, where was she? What had happened? She stared up at the tiled ceiling in confusion for a moment before the memories flooded in, broken and blurry, but there.

A car crash.

Tears welled up in her eyes as the residual panic set in. She tried to turn her head, but it hurt too much. Her eyes strained to see what was going on around her. "Sarah?" she croaked. Her throat felt like she had swallowed a bunch of sand. Dry. Everything ached. Please, please let Sarah be okay...

Sarah hadn't woken up at all. She was hooked up to machines that monitored her vital signs, a blood bag, and an oxygen mask. She was in worse shape than she would have thought. Her breathing was stable at least, but if she were awake, she would have felt the pain with each breath. Now in a hospital gown, Sarah's prosthetics were clearly seen. They suffered scratches, but otherwise the worst they suffered were dents. Nothing a few hours of maintenance couldn't fix. Of course, it wouldn't have been seen given that she was tucked under a blanket.

As the monitors would suggest, Sarah was stable. There was a bandage around her head and around her entire torso as well if one were to look. On both places, they were soaked with a little blood. Her leg didn't have any serious damage, she would be able to walk just fine in a few days.

Anna struggled. There was no response to her call. She laid there in frustration for a few minutes until a nurse showed up to check on her. "Ah, good, you're awake." "What happened? Where's Sarah? Is she okay?" "Easy there. Let me adjust your bed. Your friend is right there, she hasn't woken up yet but she's okay. You were in a car accident, sweetheart. You broke your legs and three ribs, and got a little beaten up, but you're going to be just fine."

The nurse raised the bed so Anna could more or less sit up. She could see Sarah in the bed next to her now, asleep or still unconscious. From what she could see of herself, her left leg was in a cast. She couldn't see the bandages wrapped around her midsection, but she could feel them, and there were some stitches on her right cheek from where the skin had been sliced open. She had a big bruise on the right side of her head where it had collided with the door of the car, and bruises all over her arms, legs, and torso. The nurse looked her over and administered some morphine through the IV that was stuck in her arm.

The meds took the pain away, making Anna a little dizzy. She couldn't think straight, so she just stared at the television screen mounted on the wall across from her. Family Feud was on. Anna couldn't remember the last time she'd watched Family Feud. She tried to relax into the hospital bed as she felt her eyes grow heavy again.

This was a familiar sight.

The bright light overhead was the first thing that greeted her. The lingering scent of medicine was the next thing she noticed. Definitely a hospital. There was no mistaking it. Why was she here again? For a moment she kept her eyes fixed on the ceiling to see if her eyes were damaged in any way, but they seemed to work fine. The zooming feature worked well with no jitter.

She remembered the crash, and the disjointed events that followed. She turned her head slightly and saw Anna in the bed next to hers. Her leg was in a cast... That was not the best sign. Sarah tried to sit herself up, but after rising an inch from the bed, a surge of pain caused her to freeze and gasp. Clenching her teeth, she lowered herself back down. There were definitely some broken bones.

"How are you feeling, Anna?" she asked, her voice a little more than a whisper. God it hurt to breathe.
