A Musical Discovery

Daniel had been at Starlight Academy for just less than a week, and so far was having trouble finding his way around the huge school. He had kept to himself, and avoided confrontation, but he was amazed by the other students, who, like him, had powers beyond those of natural humans. Even he had only known of his powers for several months. It was only days before his 16th birthday that they revealed themselves, and Dan was unsure what to think of them.

He almost regretted telling his parents about his new found abilities. He missed life at home so dearly. Even without the polluted air of his hometown, Seattle, Washington, he felt terribly out of place at the academy. Back home he had friends, family, and a semi-established daily routine. Here, he relaxed passively in the lounge and attended the necessary classes. Today, however, his routine would be changed up slightly.

He was surprised that he had never seen it before; a plain door, no different than any others, besides the neat label that read, "Music Room". When he discovered it, he could not help himself. He pushed the door open, anticipating an awkward situation, but found the room devoid of other people. Positioned neatly and strategically around the room were musical instruments of all sorts. The first to catch his eye was the row of guitars along a far wall. His eyes lit up and his mouth transformed into a boyish grin.

He rushed forward, picking up a Strat' that had certainly served its share of artists. He quickly located a patch chord, running into a nearby amplifier, and plugged the guitar in, turning the machine on and winding the volume up to an even 6. Master Volume and Overdrive needed to be low, and Dan hated to do it. He turned the knob labeled "Master Volume" to 3, and "Overdrive" to 0, slightly disappointed. There could be no distortion. He was testing the instrument.

Fishing a soft, blue pick from the right pocket of his faded, torn jeans, he carefully set his index finger on the low 'E' string, covering the first fret. He played the note, and closed his eyes at the sound of the 'F', ringing out clear and loud throughout the room, that he now realized was arranged perfectly. He smirked devilishly, and cranked the "Master Volume", and "Overdrive" knobs to 6 and 10 respectively, and he covered the first fret with his index finger. With his ring and pinky fingers, he covered the third fret of the 'A' string and the fourth of the 'D'.

With the click of a switch, and the flick of his wrist, the pick slid across the top three strings, and the amp created his favorite sound of all: an 'F' power chord.

Alex was walking down the hall from the computer lab. She had been working on a paper for one of her summer classes for most of the day and was happy to be done. Now she was competently work free for the rest of the week. Sticking her hands in the back pockets of her cut off jeans she hummed some catchy little tune who's name she cannot remember. She was spouse to be getting a roommate some time later in the week but until then she was completely out of people she could go to for amusement. Summer at this place sucked.

She stopped mid step as she heard a rather distinct sound coming from from the room she just walked past. The music room. Back tracking a bit she cracked open the door and saw some boy around her age practicing on one of the electric guitars. She had never been the most musically inclined or talented so she wasn't sure if the kid was any good or just randomly strumming the strings. Either way he was pretty entertaining to listen to and watch. So Alex just stood there silently in the doorway listing to the boy.

Dan continued to play, completely unaware of the girl in the doorway. His random strumming of an 'F' became a greatly improvised addition to Smells Like Teen Spirit, a song that he was occasionally embarrassed to admit to loving. It was, in most idiot mainstream people's opinions, "that one song by Nirvana". And for that, Daniel despised it. He had to admit it was one of his favorite songs to play however, as it was so easy to get lost in the humming feedback and scratchy distortion and just wing it.

As he neared the solo, he glanced up for a moment and noticed a girl standing in the doorway. Surprised, he dropped his pick and began fumbling with the strings. He nearly tipped backwards, almost falling from the amp he was sitting on. He hopped up and rested the guitar against the wall, turning the amp off.

"Am I... Not supposed to be in here? I just looked in and the guitars caught my eye..." he mumbled awkwardly. He got a good look of the girl. She looked close to his age, and was rather attractive, though through an emotional examination, he felt something was different about her. Looking away from her and staring humbly at his feet, he realized he hadn't even put shoes on before he left his dorm. He felt his face go red. What an idiot he was...

Alex watched quietly as the boy strumming evolved into some song. It sounded vaguely familiar but she couldn't place the song. She was terrible at that sort of thing, and she knew now trying to figure out what it's called would bother her all day. Either way she had lurked there long enough it was time to go.

She stepped back to do just that and was turning around when she heard the music stop. Glancing back to see what it could be she noticed the boy had noticed her and she chuckled inwardly at the way the boy reacted to her presence. He must not be use to playing in front of people or something. Whatever the case may be it's not like she could just stealthily leave now undetected, and just walking out of th room right now without saying anything would be supremely rude.

“Oh no no no,” Alex noticing the nervousness in the kids voice and the thoughts running through his head. “You can be in here, that's why they leave the door unlocked.” She turned the nob on the door for a little visual demonstration. “So you weren't doing anything wrong.” Glancing down at his feet she noticed the kid wasn't wearing any shoes and he seemed rather embarrassed about that. What happen to them did he forget them or someone steal them? “So um what was that you were playing just then?” She asked, figuring she could play it off like she didn't notice.
