Personality Description:
Astor has the demeanor of a very easily frightened squirrel. He’s jittery and easily nervous, and he would run away at the slightest provocation. Astor is a small anxiety baby. Socialization terrifies him. Casual conversation? Fidgeting. Eye contact? Please no. Phone calls? Never, not in a million years. Funnily enough, being raised in a goth family has desensitized Astor to the more common spooks. He’d prefer gore, scorpions, monsters and spiders over answering the doorbell any day. Still, Astor is a human being, and he needs human interaction. He gets most of his socialization needs with people on the internet. He has a very active online presence with multitudes of hobbies that keep him busy to distract him from his loneliness and self-loathing.
He doesn’t like showing it, but Astor is very smart and sharp. He's a great judge of character but his evaluations of people always lean on the optimistic side. He believes everyone deserves respect and the benefit of the doubt unless proven otherwise, even his bullies. Astor believes that all nasty behavior comes from somewhere. He’s a very sensitive child with a strong sense of justice.
Despite being a grim reaper, Astor has a very complicated relationship with death. Astor likes to believe everything exists for a purpose, and the fact that people die for no purpose upsets him. Astor’s greatest fear is death. An end to all things... and yet he’s obligated to deliver it to everyone dying as their guide and reaper. Astor always talks to the people he reaps, and no matter how nasty they are, he finds himself saddened by the possibility of what they could’ve been. He hates being the one that snatches their future from their hands, and that’s why he’s terrible at his job.
What Astor wants the most is to have friends and work on a creative field, but these wants are often tuned out by his incessant need to impress his father. Astor hates business and reaping but he believes that what he wants doesn’t really matter in the long run as long as he makes his father proud.
Because that’s what any son should want, right?
Powers:
the GRIM REAPER’S APPRENTICE
Astor comes from a long line of Grim Reapers, and very recently, businessmen. Astor is theunlucky one in his family that inherited his father’s title and will take over the family “business” when his dad deems that his training is complete. For the time being, Astor only has very basic reaping skills.
Soul Collecting – Astor’s most powerful power. Astor can sense when death is happening and he will be obligated to lead them to where they need to go. When Astor is soul collecting, he can enter between dimensions but not go into the afterlife. He simply has to show people the way there. During this state, Astor is incorporeal and can bypass any locks or wards. This is a compulsion granted to Reapers. Astor does not gain anything from it and he can’t abuse it. It’s a duty he has to do, nothing more, nothing less.
Mediumship – It should be a given that Astor can see and communicate with spirits by default. He can also use his body be possessed by spirits to let them communicate with the real world. He’s gotten really good at not letting this happen without consent so his mental resistance is very strong.
Death Presence – He has a strong aura of death, to the point weaker things – like grass or picked flowers and fruit – eventually just rot and die faster around him. Grass die when he makes skin contact with it. Fruits rot twice as fast. Astor has cold skin and he has eyes that terrify people with weak hearts. This has no effect on humans (other than feeling his cold, clammy hands) and he can’t control this.
Shadow Traveling – Astor can turn into a shadow and travel via shadows as long as some part of him is under it. It can’t jump from one shadow to another. For example, if there are two buildings next to each other and their shadows aren’t touching, Astor won’t be able to jump. He has to turn human and walk the gap manually. This ability is very useful in the night but useless during the day.
Immortality/Incorporeal – He can’t die. He can feel pain and get colds, but he’s immune to the worst sicknesses. Any attempt to mortally injure him would literally phase through his body. He can’t control his incorporeal state any other time, though.
(BONUS ITEM) Robes and Scythe – For the Grim Reaper get-up! Astor inherited robes and a scythe from his father. When the robes are pulled up, he can look like a walking skeleton. The scythe can cut through almost anything. Astor can summon this outfit up whenever he’s reaping but he usually prefers to be casual.
Biography:
Astor was born to Manta Carlos’ Grimm family, with his father being the powerful business mogul/local grim reaper Mr. Grimm and his mother the equally intimidating bat shifter Mrs. Lila Grimm. Between the two brothers, the charismatic Necross and the anxious Astor, Astor was the unfortunate one that ended up with his father’s powers – Reaping.
This was an unpleasant discovery between the two of them. Astor and his father were complete opposites. His father dominated Astor at every turn, and all Astor could do was wilt under his father’s command. The more his father pushed, the more Astor resented him. Every time his father took him out to practice, Astor would be left a giant, sobbing mess.
In all his years in Manta Carlos, Astor built no significant relationships other than with his mother, and if it weren’t for her constant support of him, he would’ve cracked under pressure long ago. Astor spent most of his time in his room. When he went out, he visited his therapist in secret, paying them with money he’d earned through online jobs and hoping to god his father wouldn’t punish him for choosing self-care.
Astor is currently an incoming senior. College is going to come soon and it terrifies him.
Additional Information:
Astor has been smitten with Jericho O’Malley ever since he came to SA. He keeps a picture of him in his notebook. But don’t tell Jericho, ok?? Astor will die of embarrassment. Astor is Death and will still die of embarrassment. That’s how embarrassed he’s going to be.
