"A-Angelo?" Smokey squinted at Jude. Or, well, they widened their eyes, then squinted at Jude, but not as prominently. "I asked a question. Did I... not make sense? If something exists but doesn't exist, where would it go? I know it's not in the fifth-dimension because I would be able to see my tie if it was there."

Okay. They'd changed their mind then. He could roll with that.

"Sliding into an alternate timeline, maybe? Like, the potential exists that it could be there, in another dimension. Or maybe you could make an argument that the ability to erase things from existence is just your perspective sliding into another timeline entirely."

Okay. Kind of a dick move to ignore them like that. Smokey would have been pretty impressed if someone just make something disappear complete in front of them. Guess Jude was just too "used" to that sort of stuff.

Smokey only half listened to Jude, trying to not let their annoyance show too blatantly. "You know, even if you weren't impressed, you could've pretended? Not outright lie, but, like, say something about it. I can't even get things to go away most of the time. Sometimes only parts of them disappear. I thought it was cool, at least."

Jude blinked. Jude's brain whirred.

And then, knowing what he knew, he came to the obvious conclusion.

"Oh! Oh," he said. "You already did it, right? I can't tell, obviously."

Now Smokey was confused. They just stared at Jude until they figured it out. "Wait, so, you don't remember it at all? That's... really useful.

"Thinking back to what you said, the latter sounds the most accurate. I'm seeing a different reality from you."

"I'm sure Giltenn would know, but no. I can't even tell what it is you're talking about. Whatever it is, it's just gone. You never even used your power, as far as I'm able to perceive."

And now he was wondering what it was. Only there was no point in guessing. A pencil? An object?

"You can't see it, right? But you know it was there?" And it'd be back in... eventually. A few minutes?

"I can't see it at all. I took my hair tie, blew smoke on it, and then it disappeared when the smoke dispersed. That's when you started acting like nothing happened. It should be back in a few minutes, yeah. When I removed a book, it was about 2 minutes and twenty seconds."

Okay. It was really weird talking about something that had been there, even though he knew it hadn't. There wasn't anything there. But there was.

Confusing.

"Well, it apparently voids them from existence," Jude said with a small wave. "Because for me, it was never there at all. Some people are probably immune to it? But not me, apparently."

"I wonder if it'd still work on other eldritch. Would've been useful if you were able to keep Giltenn around." They tried to not sound too upset about that, but Jude knew how much they missed Giltenn. All of that knowledge... lost...

Suddenly, right where Smokey had been holding it, the hair tie reappeared. Since Smokey had changed positions since then, the tie fell to the floor. "Oh... That was faster than I expected. Alright... I need to figure out how to pull things back out."

More like all that knowledge... relocated. Jude knew where Giltenn was at that point, but he'd been keeping things quiet... mostly to make sure his dad didn't go sniffing around.

And then, all of a sudden, the hair tie had always been there. Jude reached up, pinching at his nose.

"I'm not sure I'd have even noticed it going missing if you hadn't pointed it out," he said. "Like something changing in the background or something. A memory gap. But it has a lot of weird applications, doesn't it?"
